Why Protein Is So Important If You Want To Lose Weight
01.06.2019If protein were a superhero that graced your comic books, then characters like Superman and Batman wouldn’t be that famous. Or, if protein were Santa during Christmas, every kid would be “brimming with joy.” But why?
Simple. Because protein — much like Santa carrying all the gifts — has it all.
Protein helps you build muscle and aids in maintaining it. It helps your body perform a variety of functions, including the regulation of your hormones and enzymes. And of course, it helps you lose weight, and it also helps stop lost weight from coming back.
So now you might be asking, “But how?”
Protein does this in two ways. First, dietitians refer to protein as “satisfying,” which is a term they use for something that quickly fills you up during a meal. Basically, the faster you feel full, the lesser the chance of you eating a lot or overindulging. That’s because protein elevates the peptide levels in your stomach, which then sends “fullness signals” to your brain.
The second is that protein is “satiating,” which is a term used for how full you feel after eating. And we all know that feeling full after eating stops you from eating snacks and more.
According to various research, consuming 30 grams of protein during meals is enough to make you feel full both while eating and after. As a bonus, this amount is also the same one you need for muscle growth and maintenance.
The amount, however, should be consistent during meal times.
But before you go looking for any food that has protein, it’s also important to choose the type of protein you’re eating.
“Protein quality is important, but it’s more about the variety you’re eating,” Men’s Health nutrition advisor Mike Roussell, Ph.D. said. That means eating chicken is good, but other types of protein from food like steak and fish are also important. Even in dieting, variety is essential.
It’s also important to steer clear of high-calorie and sugary foods that boast a lot of protein, since both won’t help with your weight loss goal.
