• How to Beat Common Winter Ailments

    18.12.2017

The onset of winter brings about many things. For starters, a change in climate, a refreshing alternative to the arid heat we in India have to endure through most months in a year. Secondly, winter also induces people to sleep more; a welcome development most would argue.

Just as with most good things, there are downsides to the onset of this season – a recurring cycle of medical ailments find a proclivity for being particularly notorious. How do you combat them, and what are they?

    Here’s a list.

    1) The Common Cold
The direct result of loss of body temperature is one of the reasons behind the common cold. Dryness on Indian roads due to the dust could also be a contributing factor. Incidentally, some researchers argue that it is in fact not the temperature but the people that we are exposed to while all flocking indoors who transmit the common cold.
Beating the common cold is relatively simple. Vitamin C-rich in supplement form is potent and effective against the common cold. Try and avoid crowded places like trains and buses that offer little ventilation. Drink plenty of water and consume zinc-rich foods and garlic, both of which are helpful in the fight against the common cold.

    2) Cough
A unique combination of dust, dryness, and cold winds usually brings about the winter cough.  There are many simple and effective ways to combat this. Staying hydrated; for starters, helps lubricate the throat and prevent itchy and dry sensations that can trigger repetitive coughing. Humidifiers also help in liquefying persistent phlegm in the throat region, thereby providing relief.

    3) The Flu
Almost a seasonal occurrence across India, queues at doctors’ clinics swell up just as winter sets in. The flu is inherently a part of Indian winters, thriving in low humidity and a sudden dip in temperature. Combating the Flu firstly involves including fermented drinks and foods in your diet – the immune-boosting micro flora certainly helps. Secondly, a good night’s sleep is critical to repairing your body, the lack of which makes you prone to illness.

    4) Itchy Skin
Germ-sensitive people usually developing itchy scalp or skin owing to dryness and additional sebum secretion from skin glands. Solutions to these problems include using moistening creams, staying hydrated at all times, applying oils to your scalp daily, and avoiding oily foods from the streets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfHbDouJNJA

    5) Headaches
Headaches are often caused by a long exposure to cold winds, easily prevalent in the winter season. Have your ears covered at all costs, if the cold weather gets to you. Avoid dust if you have sinus problems. Wear a helmet, if you are on a two-wheeler. The remedies are aplenty. Stay hydrated at all costs i.e. the feeling of thirst isn’t necessarily an indicator of dehydration.
