• 3 Bodybuilding Supplements That Are An Absolute Waste Of Money

Apart from a handful supplements, a ton of them that are being sold today in the name of hypertrophy are completely useless. If you are a beginner, or even an intermediate lifter, chances are that you don’t need a lot of supplements that you may just be using. Here are some of them.

    1) Arginine

Arginine is added as a pump ingredient in pre-workouts and also sold individually for vasodilation- promising extreme pumps. However, there is no evidence to support these claims. It is a conditionally essential amino acid (meaning healthy individuals don’t need to supplement with it), it plays a role in maintaining blood flow and nitric oxide levels. Hence, one might think consuming arginine would also increase blood nitric oxide levels. Oral supplementation of arginine seems to produce negligible effects as it is digested by the enzyme called arginase. And the amount of arginine (~30g) you would need to consume to raise blood nitrogen levels would give you diarrhea.

    2) Cla, L-Carnitine, Green Coffee Extract and Fat Burners

CLA, L-Carnitine, Green Coffee Extract are all advertised as potent fat burning agents in theory. Unfortunately, in independent clinical trials, they have not produced any notable difference in fat loss. They might be useful for competitive athletes who are already lean and aiming to go below 10% body fat. If you are above 12% body fat, you are just wasting your money on these products. Fat burners are not very good supplements. Apart from these ingredients, fat burners might also contain other illegal compounds such ephedrine, clenbuterol or DNP, which can cause severe anxiety and insomnia and in some cases, even death.

    3) Hydrolysed Whey Protein

This hot shot cousin of whey protein costs almost INR 3500 more than normal whey protein concentrate. All that extra money because of an extra fancy process called ‘enzymatic hydrolysis’! This process further breaks down the protein structure enhancing its rate of digestion. But whey protein itself is a fast digesting protein source, enhancing its rate of digestion might do more harm than good. Also, studies have shown that post-workout consumption of whey protein, whole eggs or chicken generates similar protein synthesis in muscle cells. Hence, there is no need to spend so much for a super-fast digesting protein.
