A lean and healthy body is a result of balanced nourishment, metabolism-boosting diet and a healthy & active lifestyle.

Weight management is a combination of diet & lifestyle and exercise with around 70% contribution coming from diet and remaining from Exercise. The mechanism of energy balance in the body needs to be understood first to get insight into the weight increase or decrease.

The energy that we put into the body is in form of various food items that we consume, which is measured in K Cal or simply called calories. Macro-nutrients like fats, carbohydrates and proteins are main source of energy for the body.

In terms of energy usage by the body, firstly there is resting metabolism i.e. the energy used by the body to meet its daily routine i.e. digestion, breathing, circulation of blood, operation of various organs, etc., which is determined by Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). One can calculate their BMR using the Health Calculator provided on our website. This provides the minimum calories required for maintenance of body.

Now, we also undertake physical exertion during the day in various forms such exertion elevates the metabolism, therefore the requirement of calories is higher than BMR during that time.

Carbohydrates or carbs for short are the preferred source of energy in the body and body tries to use that first. Fats, which are compact form of energy (having more than double the energy per g of food as compared to other macro-nutrients) are used as reserve form of energy. Proteins as an energy source are the least preferred by the body and it only gets used when neither carbs nor fats are available. Otherwise, proteins are stored in form of muscles in normal course.

So, when we consume higher calories against the requirement mainly in form of carbs and fats, the excess energy is stored by the body in form of fat and it gets deposited around different parts of the body, more visible around stomach and buttocks.

Now, when we want to reduce these excess fats in the body, we have to alter both our diet as well as physical exertion as follows:

In terms of diet, restrict your intake of calories to be lower than your BMR. Eg. If your BMR is say 2500 K Calories, restrict your dietary input to around 2000–2200 K Cals. Within that, please take care to cut down on saturated

fats and carbs, especially simple carbs like sugars. Unhealthy calories from sugar, refined grains and saturated fats creates sudden spike in insulin levels and develops excess body fat, which can set you up for health risks such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Instead focus on more proteins and fibres. With this, the body would be deprived of basic energy sources like Carbs and Fats and would be forced to utilise stored fats to convert into energy and meet the BMR. Some natural anti-oxidants if taken in this diet would aid in the fat-burning process.

Physical exertion of min 45 minutes for 5 days a week (this may include running, jogging, cycling, swimming, skipping, aerobics, active sports, etc or strength training) is necessary to hasten your metabolism and therefore your fat-burn. Further, higher physical exertion leads to development of lean muscle mass, which is aptly supported by proteins in your diet.
